The Glyptodonts: Ancient, monstrous armadillos but perhaps not so ancient at all

GlyptodonThis is a wonderful read! The Glyptodonts were a family of extraordinary armadillo-like creatures which lived in South America for millions of years and probably died out in the last ice-age, about 12,000 years ago. Some of the Glyptodonts were bigger and heavier than cars and most possessed a long tail with a spiked, weighty knob on the end which was probably used for intra-specific combat. They have always been thought to have close relationships with present-day armadillos but new research demonstrates just how close that relationship is. In fact armadillos and Glyptodonts were probably sub-families within the same family.
